Human euthanasia is the act of intentionally ending a person’s life to relieve suffering, typically due to a terminal illness or unbearable pain. In Canada, this practice is legally regulated as Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD), where eligible individuals can choose a peaceful, dignified death with the help of a licensed healthcare provider, under strict legal and ethical guidelines.

Euthanasia, or MAiD in Canada, is a legally regulated medical procedure where a physician or nurse practitioner helps a person end their life at their voluntary request, under specific legal and medical criteria.

Yes. MAiD has been legal in Canada since 2016, with updates in legislation occurring in 2021 to expand eligibility under Bill C-7.

To be eligible, a person must:

  • Be 18 years or older and mentally competent

  • Have a grievous and irremediable medical condition

  • Make a voluntary request (free of pressure)

  • Give informed consent

  • Be eligible for publicly funded healthcare in Canada

As of now, MAiD for mental illness alone is delayed in Canada and under further review. Currently, a mental illness must be accompanied by another qualifying condition to be eligible.

  • Euthanasia is when a healthcare professional administers the life-ending medication.

  • Assisted suicide is when the patient self-administers the prescribed medication.
